If you’re planning a Desert Botanical Garden wedding, early May is beautiful — but only if you’re strategic about it.
We started this day before sunrise at The Phoenician. Getting ready early meant we avoided the Phoenix heat and protected their energy from the start. Rebecca got ready with her mom and sister while the sky was still dark, which gave the morning a calm, grounded feel instead of a rushed one.
They chose to do a first look at the hotel by a quiet fountain and garden. Not for drama — for logistics. They wanted to spend the entire day together and travel to the Desert Botanical Garden side by side. No hiding. No pressure about being seen. Just intention.
When we arrived at the Garden, we went straight into portraits. The light here is best when the sun is low on the horizon, so we prioritized those images first. Soft glow, clean shadows, desert plants lit up without harsh contrast. Strategy always wins in the desert.
Guests began arriving and mingling in the Steele Herb Garden before the ceremony beneath the arches. It was intimate and relaxed — everyone chatting, no rigid timeline energy. After the ceremony, we handled family formals efficiently so the couple could slip away for private vows in a quieter corner of the herb garden while guests headed to brunch.
On the walk to the restaurant, we ducked into a temporary orchid exhibit — one of the reasons I love this venue. The Garden rotates seasonal installations, so there’s always something visually fresh.
Brunch was casual, but thoughtful. Simple tables, floral centerpieces, nothing overdone. This is what I mean when I say you can have an intimate wedding and still make it beautiful. You don’t need spectacle — just intentional details placed where they matter.
If you’re considering a Desert Botanical Garden wedding, timing and flow make all the difference. Build it around light. Protect your experience. Then add the details that feel like you.
If this kind of calm, thoughtfully planned wedding feels aligned, I’d love to help you create it. Inquire through my contact page here and let’s start designing your day around what matters most to you.
